Project Title: 1955 Chevrolet 210 4 Door Sedan ("Lucy")
Project Type: Individual mechanical & electrical
Project Status: Ongoing
Project Description: I have always loved cars, and ever since taking a class on building models in the first grade, I have had a special affinity for the Harley Earl designed Chevrolet. This particular tri-five, a southern '55 Chevy, was my first car. I saved up for it for and bought the loveable "more-door" sight unseen when I was 14. It arrived in Michigan after a nearly 900 mile tow in rather dilapidated form, and I knew immediately that I had a fun project on my hands.
Since that first night figuring out why Chevrolet opted to put synchronizer rings between second and third gears but not between first and second, I have torn down and built up just about every piece of the car. Without a doubt, Lucy has taught me more than any other project I have undertaken. I learned how to do bodywork, repair the interior, and rebuild the powertrain by experimenting with little more than a set of open ended wrenches and a screwdriver - I even experimented with trying to run the car on hydrogen produced by electrolysis! This vehicle is what inspired me to enter engineering, and I drive it regularly to this day.
Lucy was featured in the January 2009 issue of Hemmings Classic Car Magazine, in the "Next Generation" column.
